This weekend signals the start of the season at Vodafone Speedway – Western Springs. The competitors will have the opportunity to get their brand-new cars out onto the brand-new track surface.
The track surface is now a red clay compound bought into the venue in the past month or so. The team made the most of the narrow window between rain showers and got the old track material out, set the shape of the base, and then loaded the new clay in. The next couple of shows will allow the new surface to settle in, ready for the big shows starting early December.
With the largest number of competitors for decades, it will be great to see the new designs and paint jobs these cars have. As always, the best time to take a photo of your car is before it goes out on the track, as they quickly lose that new look. The registered total competitor entries have 29 TQ Midgets, 29 F2 Midgets, 26 Open Grade Midgets, 18 Kiwi Kids and 27 Sprint Cars, and 16 International visiting drivers, so the place will be bulging at the seams.
With the weather looking below average this Saturday, we will probably bump this Practice Day to Sunday. Keep an eye on this page for the updates. Cars will be out on track at around noon, and it is free for anyone to park, and come along to watch. Bring the family along, grab a poster from the blue container beside the track and enjoy the day.
