It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Ivan Mauger who is regarded by many as the world’s greatest speedway rider.
The 6 times world champion died in Queensland from cognitive aphasia aged 78. Mauger retired to the Gold Coast in 1987 but continued his love of speedway riding mentoring young drivers.
He won 15 world titles along with countless other events and was crowned New Zealand Sportsman of the Year in 1977 and 1979, and was inducted into the New Zealand Hall of Fame in 1990.
Thanks for the memories.
