A large crowd came to salute the legends and witnessed a bizarre night of racing. Circumnavigation of the track proved to be an issue for many drivers as the crash crew were kept on their toes. Driver Facebook feeds lit up, a substantial number of drivers claiming they were taken out with somewhat fewer admitting fault for crashes. Whilst the track was slick early it was hardly undriveable. By the end of the night the track team had procured an excellent racing surface.
Through all the drama fans witnessed a brilliant farewell performance from USAC Midget champion Tyler Courtney. Starting on grid 19, Courtney hit the front on just lap 7. Fellow American Logan Seavey followed suit, through to second place on lap 9 but he couldn’t hold off Michael Pickens when the nine-time national champion challenged a few laps later. The lead trio set about trading lap times for the remainder of the race on the high line of the track. Stalwart Daniel Eggleton took a popular win in the Sprintcars.
Steve Smith led from the front for much of the race but a dream win wasn’t to be. Eggleton was the one driver to consistently move forward in a race punctuated by an end over end crash for the returning Jonathan Allard. The F2 Midgets and TQ’s competed to find which class could produce the most dnf’s, tying at 10 a-piece. Mike Driver and Aaron Humble took the wins.
Rolling Thunder takes place on February 15th and will feature the Super Saloons in addition to all the regular Springs classes. Format will return to fastest off the front for the penultimate meeting of the season.
