With the replacement of the race surface at Vodafone Speedway – Western Springs well underway, we took the opportunity to have a number of Drivers and Officials come along to speak directly to the team making these changes.
With the track surface and part of the original base removed, the plan was to reshape the race track to ensure the new track provided at least two racing lines. The drivers spoke directly to the team conducting the earthworks and it was great to see everyone walk away with a very clear plan going forward.
“This can be a very expensive exercise in moving hundreds of tonnes of dirt around the place, said Mark Perham – Managing Director of Field Turf NZ Limited, “and having the feedback from these guys helps us ensure we get it right the first time”.
Mark’s expertise is ‘dirt’. He specializes in International Cricket Pitches around the world, in fact, he recently returned from Florida having installed one there. Mark has been coming to Speedway for over 10 years at Western Springs and knew he could help when he saw how much dust was created with the previous surface. This new material has a 70% clay content and should be the answer in both providing a fantastic racing surface and one that the crowd will enjoy too.
